Growth Mindeset v Fixed Mindset

Based on the attached article and a growth mindset lesson plan produced for Khan Academy, my colleagues and I have witnessed our student's fascination with how the brain works. We started the week with a couple of short videos to stimulate conversation about whether we are born intelligent or whether we can grow our intelligence. Explaining to students how the neurons in the brain become more connected over time was powerful.

Discussion instigated by students demonstrated how in tune they are with the way they learn. Almost all of them were confident enough to explain how they learn best and were able to give multiple examples of how they use left and right brain experiences in life and learning. Students of Grade 5 were unanimous when explaining that they use their 'right brain' more than their 'left brain' and how adults tend to use their left brain more due to reasons such as 'having to do a job' and 'being distracted by the boring things in life'.

The Brainology lesson plans provided useful guides to TED talks and brain growing exercises we can all do with our students.
